Although the first settlements in this area date back to Roman times, San Miguel De Salinas became an independent municipality back in 1836. Since then the town has grown and is currently home to approximately 6,000 residents.
The centre of the town is dominated by the Parroquia De San Miguel Arcangel, a Catholic Church and the plaza.
The area has been a magnet for northern Europeans and has a large ex-pat community. Within the town are a great selection of bars, restaurants, supermarkets and all of the amenities for daily living.
Every Wednesday there is a large street market with over 140 stalls offering local produce, clothes, household goods and all manner of services.
The town sits 75m above sea level and offers great views of the surrounding farmland, lakes and the sea.
